These interview questions were supplemental to the research creation pilot project Procession: The Unlearning. Research assistants put these questions to participants as a means of putting the theory of situation into practice by extending the immersive theatre project as a live experiment, and feeding participant perception back into the design of future performances.
Introductory questions
Which of the “school schedules” did you have?
Which moments did you find most surprising / have you found most memorable?
How did you feel during the experience? How did your emotional responses shift during the experience?
How immersive was the experience? Did you feel more or less involved at particular times? What seemed to contribute most to immersion or a lack thereof?
Situation Questions
What did you think the experience was about? Did your understanding change or evolve over the course of the evening?
How did you respond to your assigned role? Did you feel like a student? Did you feel like you were acting?
Did you feel tempted to break away from the main group? Why? Did you break away from the main group? Why?
At which points (if any) did you feel like your actions mattered? E.g. would affect the success of the show or the quality of your own experience.
When did it feel like the show began? When did it end?
During the show did you ever feel like you exited the framing situation?
Were you ever unsure about who was an “actor” and who was a fellow “participant”? When?
To what extent did each part of the experience feel like a distinct situation? To what extent did the parts feel integrated into an overall situation?
